CAIRO “The CONQUEROR”

The capital of Egypt and the largest city of Africa and the Arab world, Cairo has been a focal point of Egyptian tourism for its rich ancient civilization. Located near the Nile Delta and titled “the city of thousand minarets” for its preponderance of Islamic architecture, Cairo is famous for its proximity with the ancient cities of Giza, Memphis and Fustat.

Founded in 969 A.D., Cairo has been around for more than a thousand years and is still flourishing. It has been a witness to all kinds of historical footprints: from Pharaohs to the Roman empire, Muslim rulers, Crusaders, the visit of Ibn Battuta, British and French occupations and the modern Egyptian revolution – the land composing the present-day city was the site of national capitals whose remnants remain visible in parts of Old Cairo.

Egyptians today refer to Cairo as Maṣr - the Arabic version of the name for Egypt itself - emphasizing the city’s constant role in Egyptian influence. Its official name is Al-Qahirah, which means “the Vanquisher” or “the Conqueror”, but Egyptians call it Um al Dunya which means “Mother of the World”.

Today Cairo can be visited for its rich historical, geographical, archeological, architectural, cultural and spiritual reasons.
